Remember the time when you could drop a letter in the mail, and it would arrive at its destination as early as the next day? Those times have been long gone since 2012 for the citizens in Albany, Columbus, Macon and all counties in Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, thanks to Sanford Bishop.
The United States Postal Service closed the mail sorting facilities in Macon, Columbus and Albany in 2012. The day the facility closed in Columbus, Congressman Sanford Bishop was said to be hosting his annual golf tournament at his country club.
“This would not have happened if I had been your congressman,” said commonsense conservative Wayne Johnson, who will face off with Rep. Bishop in the November General Election. “Twelve years ago, it appears Bishop had already stopped doing the job that he was elected to do in Washington, and that has been disappointing. Sanford Bishop should have been raising hell about this.”
Closing these postal facilities means that hundreds of people lost their jobs. Closing these facilities means critical mail with checks or legal mail getting lost. This is the Federal government making an unwise decision that impacts you on a daily basis.
“If I had been your congressman, I would have gone to the USPS leadership, not ask them to come to me, and demanded to know what this would mean to Middle and Southwest Georgia, to people in Macon, Columbus, Albany and the other counties of the 2nd District,” said Johnson, a husband to his wife, Joy, for 52 years, father and grandfather. “I would have advocated for you, your family and our community, no matter race or political party. I would have prevented the loss of hundreds of 2nd District jobs. I would have never stopped until the decision was reversed.”
The reason that Johnson can make this statement is because he worked inside the Executive Branch. Johnson said citizens do not realize how powerful a congressman’s voice can be when used effectively in Washington.
“I look at the terrible mail service we have had the last 10 years and cannot believe that our congressman, Sanford Bishop, a congressman with 32 years in Congress that gives him a powerful voice, did nothing to prevent this mess,” said Johnson. “One of the first things I will do when I get to Washington is to meet with the head of the postal service and sort this out to bring needed change for the citizens of the 2nd District.”
