The three major military bases in Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District have dramatic impact on citizens in the district, and Congressional candidate Wayne Johnson recognizes their value while pledging strong support if he is successful in retiring Rep. Sanford Bishop in November.
Johnson is working hard to defeat Sanford Bishop in the November General Election for a seat in the U.S. House of Representative from Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Macon, Columbus, Albany and 30 different counties.
“We are blessed to have Robins Air Force base, Fort Moore and the Marine Logistics Base in our district, and their financial impact cannot be overstated,” said Johnson, a U.S. Army veteran. “These bases are important to our national defense and our local and state economies. I can assure the leadership at these three bases, and the thousands of civilians and military that work on them, that I will be a close, strong ally to make certain they have the resources they need.”
Robins Air Force base in Houston County, established in 1941, is the home to the 78th Air Base Wing and is the largest single-site industrial complex in Georgia. There are 5,000 active military on the base, which also employees more than 22,000 civilians. Over time, Robins Air Force base has evolved from a major bomber base to one that is utilizing AI and drone technology. It is also a place where airplanes are taken down to the bolts and rebuilt to factory standards.
“Our military at Robbins Air Force base are literally flying drones as part of our involvement in the Israel conflict with Hamas and Iran,” said Johnson, a U.S. Army veteran. “The drone technology there engages in carrying out drone missions around the world.”
Fort Moore is a U.S. Army post near Columbus in Muscogee County, and its mission is to train the Army’s infantry to help in the defense of our country. Fort Moore supports active-duty military, family members, reserve component soldiers, retirees and civilian employees.
Fort Moore was established in 1918 and originally named Fort Benning. The military base covers 182,000 acres in Muscogee County.
Fort Benning, a massive U S. Army training base near Columbus, Ga., was renamed Fort Moore in May of last year to honor the late Lieutenant General Harold “Hal” Moore and his wife, Julia.
“I am proud of the fact that the soldiers trained at Fort Moore are on the front line when it comes to protecting the homeland,” said Johnson, “and I am proud that this critical military base is in the 2nd District.”
The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany covers 3,300 acres and was established in March of 1952. It is home to more than 600 Marines and 2,500 civilians. The primary mission of the units on the base is to rebuild and repair ground combat and combat support equipment and to support installations on the East Coast of the United States.
